<div style="color: #333333; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">A team of American and European researchers have confirmed that the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction — the event that wiped out roughly 75% of the planet’s species, including almost every dinosaur — was caused by an asteroid impact in Mexico 66 million years ago. The Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction was the last great extinction event to occur on Earth, and is most notable for causing the diversification of mammals that eventually resulted in <em>Homo sapiens</em>.</span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">66 million years ago an asteroid roughly 15 kilometers (9 miles) wide hurtled into Chicxulub, Mexico. The collision, which left behind a 180-kilometer (110-mile) crater, released 420 zettajoules of energy — 100 teratonnes of TNT, or roughly two million times stronger than the largest thermonuclear device ever used (the Russian Tsar Bomba). The impact created a huge dust cloud that blocked out the Sun, starting the extinction ball rolling by killing off much of the world’s plants, and thus the herbivores soon after. Due to high levels of oxygen in the Cretaceous atmosphere, the impact may also have caused intense, global firestorms that killed off many other species. Because the asteroid landed in the ocean, megatsunamis would’ve swept the world’s coasts, too.</span></div>
<div class="wp-caption alignright" id="attachment_147979" style="color: #333333; float: right; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; padding-left: 10px; width: 278px;">

</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Until now, though, there hasn’t been enough evidence that the Chicxulub impact actually<em>caused </em>the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction. There was certainly a massive asteroid impact, but previous evidence showed that the asteroid impact occurred up to 300,000 years before the extinction of the dinosaurs. Biologists and geologists have argued that there may have been another cause — an impact at the Shiva crater off the coast of India, global volcanic eruptions, or perhaps something more gradual.</span></div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Now, however, European and American scientists have re-tested debris from Chicxulub using state-of-the-art equipment and narrowed the asteroid impact down to a period of 11,000 years, between 66.03 and 66.04 million years ago — almost simultaneous with the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction. When dealing with geological timescales, a range of 11,000 years is about as accurate as you can get. As the research paper puts it, though, “the Chicxulub impact likely triggered a state shift of ecosystems already under near-critical stress.” In other words, prior to the extinction event, Earth was already teetering on the edge of self-annihilation. The asteroid was simply the zettajoule stick that broke T-Rex’s back.</span></div>
<div style="font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px; text-align: justify;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
<div style="line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<span style="color: blue;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">La topographie de Chicxulub.
<div style="line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">

<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The next time you bite into a supermarket tomato and are less than impressed with the taste, blame aesthetics. A new study reveals that decades of breeding the fruits for uniform color have robbed them of a gene that boosts their sugar content.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The finding is "a massive advance in our understanding of tomato fruit development and ripening," says Alisdair Fernie, who studies the chemical composition of tomatoes at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology in Potsdam, Germany.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The tomato originated in South America and is now grown around the world. More than 15 million tons are harvested in the United States alone each year. Farmers pluck the fruits from the vine before they are ripe, and for about 70 years breeders have selected tomatoes that are uniformly light green at that time. This makes it easier to spot the tomatoes that are ready to be harvested and ensures that, by the time they hit supermarket shelves, the fruits glow with an even red color. Wild varieties, in contrast, "have dark green shoulders, and that makes it harder to determine the right time to harvest," says Ann Powell, a plant scientist at the University of California, Davis. Consumers might also find unevenly colored tomatoes less appealing, she suggests.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">To find the gene behind the color change, Powell and colleagues crossed cultivated varieties of tomatoes with wild species. By selecting those plants with dark green shoulders and crossing them back with the cultivated varieties, they narrowed down the culprit to a region on chromosome 10. Using the recently completed tomato genome sequence they then identified the gene as <em>SlGLK2—</em>a so-called transcription factor, which controls when and where other genes are switched on or off.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">In wild tomatoes, <em>SlGLK2</em> increases the formation of chloroplasts, the compartments in plant cells that carry out photosynthesis. Chloroplasts use a green pigment, chlorophyll, to capture the sunlight plants need to grow. A higher number of chloroplasts gives wild tomatoes their darker green color. Even though chloroplast formation and chlorophyll synthesis are among the most important developmental processes in biology, little is known about them, says David Francis, a tomato geneticist at Ohio State University, Wooster, who was not involved in the work. This is a "significant and important" finding, he says. "The authors have described a gene that helps regulate the process."</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">In most tomatoes on supermarket shelves, however, <em>SlGLK2</em> is inactive. "We looked at about a dozen varieties, one from Asia, some from Europe, and all of them had the same mutation," says Powell. The researchers do not know where the mutation—a string of bases consisting of seven As, where there should only be six—came from initially. But it might have arisen independently multiple times, says Powell, because repetitions of the same letter of the genetic alphabet are prone to errors.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">While the mutation was beneficial to farmers, it's not such a sweet deal for consumers. Chloroplasts use the light energy they capture to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugars. Tomatoes with a mutated <em>SlGLK2</em>gene not only have fewer chloroplasts, they also sport less sugar. By inserting an intact copy of the gene into tomatoes, the researchers increased the amount of glucose and fructose in ripe fruits by up to 40%, the authors write in the paper, published online today in <em>Science</em>. The content of lycopene, an antioxidant that could have significant health benefits, was also increased. Because of regulations the scientists were not allowed to eat these tomatoes, but they suggest that the higher sugar content should make the fruits more palatable. The intact gene could be crossed back into tomatoes by traditional breeding, says Powell.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Francis is not yet convinced that that will improve the taste, however. The increased sugar content might also be due to changes in other parts of the plants, he suggests. (About 80% of the sugar in tomatoes is actually produced in the leaves and transported to the fruit later.) He also cautions that the results obtained in small greenhouse pots might be different from what growers would see in field-grown tomatoes. "The real culprit affecting tomato flavor is a production system that picks tomatoes before they are ripe," because that changes the ripening process, he says, interrupting for instance the conversion of starch to sugar.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Powell agrees that the early harvest affects fruit quality: "Ripening probably doesn't proceed the same way when the fruit is plucked from the vine," she says. There might be more than one reason that supermarket tomatoes pale in comparison.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">*********************************************************************************************</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<div style="color: blue; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<div style="color: blue; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"></span><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">
</span><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">
</span><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">
</span><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">
</span><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">

<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">This is described by PD Dr. Kathrin Lampert from the RUB's Department of Animal Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity along with colleagues from Würzburg, Bremen, Kiel and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) in the journal <em>Current Biology</em>. "Coelacanths are rare and extremely endangered. Understanding the genetic diversity of these animals could help make preservation schemes against their extinction more effective" says the biologist.</span></div>

<div style="line-height: 15px; padding-bottom: 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 5px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Previous genetic studies focused mainly on the biological relationships of coelacanths to lungfish and and vertebrates. In order to assess whether the fish are still able to adapt to new environmental conditions, however, you have to know the genetic diversity within the species. For this purpose, the research team examined 71 specimens from various sites on the east coast of Africa. The researchers analysed genetic markers from the nucleus and from the mitochondria, the powerhouses of the cells.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15px; padding-bottom: 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 5px; text-align: justify;">

<div style="line-height: 15px; padding-bottom: 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 5px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The data generally revealed low genetic diversity. As presumed, the evolution of these animals is only progressing slowly. Nevertheless, certain genetic patterns were only found in certain geographic regions. "We assume that the African coelacanth originally came from around the Comoros Islands, home to the largest known population" Lampert explains. Since then, however, two further, now independent populations have established themselves in South Africa and Tanzania. In addition, the animals around the Comoros belong to two genetically distinct groups. "We have thus been able to show that despite their slow evolutionary rate, coelacanths continue to develop and are potentially also able to adapt to new environmental conditions" says the RUB researcher. "The image of the coelacanth as a passive relic of bygone times should therefore be put into perspective."</span></div>

<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Coelacanths, <em>Latimeria chalumnae</em>, were regarded as extinct until Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer discovered a live specimen on a fishing boat in 1938. Since then, more than a hundred have been found off the coast of East Africa, most of them off the Comoros. There are probably only a few hundred specimens left in the world, which are seriously threatened with extinction. "Coelacanths are close relatives of the last common ancestor of fish and land vertebrates, and therefore of great scientific interest," says Kathrin Lampert. "By researching them, we hope to gain new insights into one of the major steps of evolution: the colonisation of land."</span></div>

<div style="color: blue; padding-bottom: 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 5px; text-align: justify;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Les données indiquent généralement une faible diversité génétique.

<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It's proven: the role of "carbon sink" forests, which offsets about 25% of fossil carbon emissions, is influenced by human activities, and in proportions far unsuspected. In reaching this conclusion, an international team of scientists measured the ability of carbon sequestration by forests of various ages. First result: forest ecosystems absorb only 56% of maximum amounts of carbon fixed in adulthood. In other words, the exploitation of forests, which shortens their life cycle, reducing their ability to fix carbon. More unexpectedly, the researchers detected a correlation between the amount of carbon absorbed by a forest during his life and nitrogen air pollution. The most polluted sites, carbon sequestration is enhanced, probably because nitrogen stimulates the growth of trees. "The direct implication of this study is simple: man must master the Operating Condition of the carbon cycle on a global scale," concludes one of the authors, Denis Loustau, INRA Bordeaux.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #0c343d;">Genetics, a discipline of biology, is the science of heredity and variation in living organisms. The fact that living things inherit traits from their parents has been used since prehistoric times to improve crop plants and animals through selective breeding. However, the modern science of genetics, which seeks to understand the process of inheritance, only began with the work of Gregor Mendel in the mid-nineteenth century. Although he did not know the physical basis for heredity, Mendel observed that organisms inherit traits via discrete units of inheritance, which are now called genes.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<span style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The famous fossil site of Messel in Germany provided another surprise for paleontologists: pairs of fossilized turtles together during their embrace. To explain this unique case, the researchers suggest that the turtles, who had their heads elsewhere, have been flushed in toxic waters.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Pairs of frozen turtles in full intercourse were found in a fossil bed German experience of about 47 million years, which is the earliest evidence ever found mating in vertebrates, indicate the discoverers. This is the fossil site of Messel, a disused quarry shale located near Frankfurt (Germany), that these couples Allaeochelys crassesculpta, now extinct species, were extracted. This deposit of Messel's famous among paleontologists and has been listed by UNESCO in 1995 as he delivered the fossil treasures, like Ida, one of our distant ancestors lemurs.</span></div>

<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Cell biology is the study of cell structure and function, and it revolves around the concept that the cell is the fundamental unit of life. Focusing on the cell permits a detailed understanding of the tissues and organisms that cells compose. Some organisms have only one cell, while others are organized into cooperative groups with huge numbers of cells. On the whole, cell biology focuses on the structure and function of a cell, from the most general properties shared by all cells, to the unique, highly intricate functions particular to specialized cells.</span><br />

<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large;">Geology is the study of the Earth, the materials of which it is made, the structure of those materials, and the processes acting upon them. It includes the study of organisms that have inhabited our planet. An important part of geology is the study of how Earth’s materials, structures, processes and organisms have changed over time.</span></div>

<div style="line-height: 16px;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Biology is the study of living things and their vital processes. Because biology covers such a broad area, it has been traditional to separate the study of plants (botany) from that of animals (zoology), and the study of structure of organisms (morphology) from that of function (physiology). Despite their apparent differences, all the subdivisions are interrelated by basic principles, so current practice tends to investigate those biological phenomena that all living things have in common. The advancement of knowledge and technology has resulted in further categorizations that include, but are far from restricted to: cell biology, population biology, ecology, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, and physical anthropology.</span></div>

<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="line-height: 22px;"><span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><b>Science can make us feel big and special for understanding the age of the Earth, the nature of stars, and the size of the universe, even if those things dwarf us.

<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="line-height: 22px;"><span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><b>Science saves lives.
